Life of Savitribai Phule

The book is a short biography on Savitribai Puhle, an attempt to take the tall leader to the young audience. The purpose is to stress upon the importance of education and social equity. It is really unfortunate that the history books prescribed for students in schools and colleges do not speak about the great life of Savitribai Phule. It is a deliberate omission, as she belonged to the backward-class community. She gave a clarion call for the rights of women at a time when women were treated as inferior human beings in India. She raised the banner of revolt and became the voice of the voiceless. As a social reformer, she helped women come out of their shells by educating them. She also fought against the evil of child marriage and other forms of oppression of women prevailing in Indian society. In Hindu society, widows were treated cruelly and forced to commit sati or lead a life of austerity, avoiding even the simple pleasures of life. Savitribai Phule encouraged and supported the widows of her time to marry again and lead a normal life.
